Tips to open GZI file
Can't open the GZI file? You are not the only one. Thousands of users face similar problems every day. Below you will find tips on how to open GZI files as well as a list of programs that support GZI files.
GZI file extension
The GZI file is supported on 3 operating systems. Depending on your operating system, you may need different software to handle the GZI files. Below is a summary of the number of programs that support and open the GZI file on each system platform.
What is GZI file?
The GZI file has been categorized as Compressed Files. In addition to this file, the Compressed Files category includes 236 related files. Unix Gzip Format is supported by 3 operating systems. The file will work on Linux, Mac OS, Windows systems, unfortunately not on others. There are also 5 alternative programs to handle the GZI file. The WinZip, 7-Zip, WinRAR, Win-GZ programs will also handle the file when the MacGzip program does not fulfill its role.
How to open GZI file?
The main problem with Unix Gzip Format is that the GZI file is incorrectly associated with programs. This causes the file GZI to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. This problem can be easily remedied.
The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the GZI file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.
Step 1. Install MacGzip
An often overlooked issue is to make sure that MacGzip is installed on the computer. This can be achieved by typing MacGzip into the operating system search engine. If it is not, installation may solve the problem, as most applications create file associations during installation. Below you will find a list of applications that support GZI files.
Programs to open GZI file
Remember to download programs supporting GZI files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.
Step 2. Create association of MacGzip with GZI files
If the application is or has been freshly installed, but the GZI file still does not use the MacGzip program, it means no association. It is most convenient to call the context menu with the right mouse button and select Properties. Information about the file and the program that the file is associated with are available here. Changes can be made using the "Change" button. It may happen that in the next window there will be no appropriate program - however, this can be corrected with the "Browse" option where you should manually indicate the program location. The "always use the selected program ..." field will set the MacGzip application as the default for handling the GZI file.
Step 3. Update MacGzip to the latest version
If, however, after binding MacGzip with Unix Gzip Format there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version.
Step 4. Check for the following problems with the GZI file
If the above steps do not help, you can assume that the file itself is not correct. File problems can be divided into the following:
The GZI file may be unusually small compared to the original file. This is most often caused by a problem while downloading the GZI file. Downloading the file again should fix the problem.
The most common cause here is computer viruses. A virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should fix the problem. Some antivirus vendors also provide free online scanners. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the GZI file that we want to open. As a result of the scan, sometimes it is not possible to recover GZI files, which are deleted if there is a backup of this file, then after restoring it, it must also be scanned.
Older version of GZI file may not always be supported by the latest software version. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for this. The repair method must be adapted to the type of file and damage. Some programs offer the option of recovering data from damaged GZI files.
The program indicates that the file is encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted GZI files cannot be played on other computers than the one on which they were encrypted, they must be decrypted before using on another device.
The operating system protects files in some locations (e.g. the root of the system partition) against unauthorized access. While there is usually no problem reading such a file, it may not be possible to save it. If possible, you can try to move the GZI file to another location.
This problem only occurs with more complex files. You may find that another program you are using is preventing you from working with the file. Just close unnecessary programs. Sometimes it is necessary to wait a while before referencing the GZI file again. Antivirus programs or a backup being made may lock the file for a while without the user's knowledge. If this does not work either, restart the device.
