Tips to open DEB file
Can't open the DEB file? You are not the only one. Thousands of users face similar problems every day. Below you will find tips on how to open DEB files as well as a list of programs that support DEB files.
DEB file extension
The DEB file is supported on 3 operating systems. Depending on your operating system, you may need different software to handle the DEB files. Below is a summary of the number of programs that support and open the DEB file on each system platform.
What is DEB file?
The .DEB file is the Linux installation package. It is in compressed form and can therefore be unpacked using archiving tools. By default, they are run from the system shell by the Debian package management system (dpkg) application. There are several other types of packages. These packages can be converted using special Alien software. Some packages need to be installed from the terminal and sometimes additional libraries are required to be downloaded.
How to open DEB file?
The most common problem when using Debian Software Package is that a specific DEB is not associated with the program. This causes the file DEB to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. This problem can be easily remedied.
The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the DEB file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.
Step 1. Install 7-Zip
An often overlooked issue is to make sure that 7-Zip is installed on the computer. The easiest method is to use the system search engine by entering the program name 7-Zip in it. In the absence of an appropriate program, its installation in the vast majority of cases will fix the problem. Later in this article you will find a list of programs that can open DEB files.

Remember to download programs supporting DEB files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.
Step 2. Create association of 7-Zip with DEB files
If, despite the installed application, the DEB file does not start in the 7-Zip application, you must create a file association. This option is available from the level of Properties of a specific file available in the context menu. The displayed window will contain information about the program that supports this type of file. Using the "Change" button we can set the program to handle this type. It may happen that in the next window there will be no appropriate program - however, this can be corrected with the "Browse" option where you should manually indicate the program location. The "always use the selected program ..." field will set the 7-Zip application as the default for handling the DEB file.
Step 3. Update 7-Zip to the latest version
If, however, after binding 7-Zip with Debian Software Package there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version. Some applications allow you to update from the program level, and for others you need to download the installer from the Igor Pavlov page and install.
Step 4. Check for the following problems with the DEB file
If the above steps do not help, you can assume that the file itself is not correct. The most common file problems are:
The DEB file may be unusually small compared to the original file. This suggests truncating the DEB file contents when downloading or copying. Downloading the file again should fix the problem.
The computer may have fallen victim to a computer virus or hacker. A quick virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should clear up any doubts. Some antivirus vendors also provide free online scanners. However, it is important to scan the entire system, not only the file DEB or the program directory. Sometimes virus-infected DEB files cannot be recovered, so make a backup in advance.
Older version of DEB file may not always be supported by the latest software version. These problems are known and are often very easy to fix using the software developers's website.
There can be many reasons for this. Repairing is very dependent on the file type. Sometimes the program itself has options to repair the most popular DEB file corruption. The easiest way is to restore the file from a backup, if there is one, or contact N/A
The program indicates that the file is encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted file DEB except for the special designation, works normally, but only on the device where it was encrypted, before transferring it to another machine, decryption is required.
The operating system protects files in some locations (e.g. the root of the system partition) against unauthorized access. While there is usually no problem reading such a file, it may not be possible to save it. If possible, you can try to move the DEB file to another location.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. In this case, the DEB file is blocked by the first application to open it. Closing other programs should help. Sometimes you have to wait for the session to the file DEB to close. Some anti-virus or backup software may occupy the DEB file for a certain period of time. If nothing helps, please reset the device.
