What is 3DM file?

A .3DM file is a CAD file that contains three-dimensional graphics. This is the main format of the Rhino Robert McNeel program. However, it is based on an open standard and provides libraries for working with this file. It is therefore also supported by other software. The format enables the correct cooperation between different approaches to CAD designs by combining them with each other in a three-dimensional projection. This allows for precise mapping of textures and planes. The file is saved in binary form.

How to open 3DM file?

The main problem with Rhino 3D Model is that the 3DM file is incorrectly associated with programs. This is manifested by the fact that 3DM files open in unusual applications or do not have an assigned program. This can be quickly resolved by following the instructions below.

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the 3DM file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install Rhino OSX

The first step is to check if the computer has the Rhino OSX program installed. To do this, enter the name Rhino OSX into the system search engine. In the absence of an appropriate program, its installation in the vast majority of cases will fix the problem. Below you will find a list of applications that support 3DM files.

Programs to open 3DM file

Remember to download programs supporting 3DM files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.

Step 2. Create association of Rhino OSX with 3DM files

However, it may happen that the application itself does not cause the 3DM file to open in the Rhino OSX application, but you can set it manually. This option is available from the level of Properties of a specific file available in the context menu. The window will show, among other things, the type of the file and the information by which the program is used to launch the file. Changes can be made using the "Change" button. If there is no software on the list, simply select "Browse" and manually select the directory where the application is installed. The "always use the selected program ..." field will set the Rhino OSX application as the default for handling the 3DM file.

Step 3. Update Rhino OSX to the latest version

If, however, after binding Rhino OSX with Rhino 3D Model there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the 3DM file

If the above steps do not help, you can assume that the file itself is not correct. File problems can be divided into the following:

The affected file may be 0 KB or smaller than expected. Usually this applies to 3DM files downloaded from the Internet in case the download did not finish properly. The file should be downloaded again, making sure that the process has finished correctly.
The most common cause here is computer viruses. Perform a virus scan using available and up-to-date anti-virus software. If this is not possible, you can use the online scanner. However, it is important to scan the entire system, not only the file 3DM or the program directory. As a result of the scan, sometimes it is not possible to recover 3DM files, which are deleted if there is a backup of this file, then after restoring it, it must also be scanned.
A typical compatibility error - the program does not support the older version of the 3DM file. These problems are known and are often very easy to fix using the software developers's website.
There can be many reasons for the failure. Depending on the type of file, it is necessary to repair it accordingly. Some programs offer the ability to automatically repair 3DM file corruption.
The program indicates that the file is encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted 3DM files cannot be played on other computers than the one on which they were encrypted, they must be decrypted before using on another device.
The operating system protects files in some locations (e.g. the root of the system partition) against unauthorized access. The problem is only writing to the file, not reading it. It is best to move 3DM to a different directory.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. In this case, the 3DM file is blocked by the first application to open it. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. If the error persists after closing other programs, wait for a while. Some anti-virus or backup software may occupy the 3DM file for a certain period of time. If nothing helps, please reset the device.
