Tips to open XWD file
Can't open the XWD file? You are not the only one. Thousands of users face similar problems every day. Below you will find tips on how to open XWD files as well as a list of programs that support XWD files.
XWD file extension
The XWD file is supported on 3 operating systems. Depending on your operating system, you may need different software to handle the XWD files. Below is a summary of the number of programs that support and open the XWD file on each system platform.
What is XWD file?
The file with the extension XWD is the Raster Image Files file type. Additionally, the Raster Image Files category contains 522 of other files. X Windows Dump Image is supported by 3 operating systems. Although it can be found with greater or lesser success on any operating system, it will only be useful on Linux, Mac OS, Windows. The XnView application is recommended to open the file. It was released by Pierre-Emmanuel Gougelet. Alternatively, you can use 7 other programs. You can use PaintShop Pro, GIMP, PMView Pro in case XnView cannot be used.
How to open XWD file?
An often recurring problem with X Windows Dump Image is that XWD is not associated with the correct program file. This is manifested by the fact that XWD files open in unusual applications or do not have an assigned program. This can be quickly resolved by following the instructions below.
The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the XWD file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.
Step 1. Install XnView
An often overlooked issue is to make sure that XnView is installed on the computer. This can be achieved by typing XnView into the operating system search engine. In the absence of an appropriate program, its installation in the vast majority of cases will fix the problem. Below is a list of programs that support the file XWD.
Programs to open XWD file
Remember to download programs supporting XWD files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.
Step 2. Create association of XnView with XWD files
If, despite the installed application, the XWD file does not start in the XnView application, you must create a file association. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. Information about the file and the program that the file is associated with are available here. Using the "Change" button we can select the desired program. It may happen that in the next window there will be no appropriate program - however, this can be corrected with the "Browse" option where you should manually indicate the program location. Checking the "Always use the selected program ..." box will permanently associate the XWD file with the XnView program.
Step 3. Update XnView to the latest version
If, however, after binding XnView with X Windows Dump Image there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version. This can be done using the application (if it provides such options) or from the Pierre-Emmanuel Gougelet website and install the latest version.
Step 4. Check for the following problems with the XWD file
If the above steps do not help, you can assume that the file itself is not correct. The most common file problems are:
The affected file may be 0 KB or smaller than expected. Usually this applies to XWD files downloaded from the Internet in case the download did not finish properly. The only repair option is to download the file again.
The most common cause here is computer viruses. A virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should fix the problem. Some antivirus vendors also provide free online scanners. For the best results, we will scan the entire operating system, not just our XWD file. Sometimes virus-infected XWD files cannot be recovered, so make a backup in advance.
Older version of XWD file may not always be supported by the latest software version. These problems are known and are often very easy to fix using the software developers's website.
There can be many reasons for the failure. Depending on the type of file, it is necessary to repair it accordingly. Some programs offer the ability to automatically repair XWD file corruption. You can restore the file from a backup or use N/A help.
The program can also signal the fact of encryption. The encrypted XWD files cannot be played on other computers than the one on which they were encrypted, they must be decrypted before using on another device.
Some of the system directories are excluded from modification. These directories are write-protected to them and it's very hard to fix this problem. If possible, you can try to move the XWD file to another location.
This problem usually affects more complex files. Some file types can only be opened in one program at a time. Closing other programs should help. Sometimes it is necessary to wait a while before referencing the XWD file again. However, some background programs may block the XWD file while scanning. If the problem persists, restart the machine.
