What is WVX file?

The .WVX file is a hash file. This is the abbreviation used by Windows Media Player. The location of the .WMV file is saved there. It is not shown to the user during playback. The .WVX file itself is small and does not include a video track. Of course, the .WMV file in the specified location must exist for playback. Due to questionable usability and incompatibility with other players, the .WXB file has not gained popularity and is rather occasional.

How to open WVX file?

An often recurring problem with Windows Media Video Redirector is that WVX is not associated with the correct program file. This is manifested by the fact that WVX files open in unusual applications or do not have an assigned program. This problem can be easily remedied.

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the WVX file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install Windows Media Player

An often overlooked issue is to make sure that Windows Media Player is installed on the computer. The easiest method is to use the system search engine by entering the program name Windows Media Player in it. In the absence of an appropriate program, its installation in the vast majority of cases will fix the problem. Below you will find a list of applications that support WVX files.

Remember to download programs supporting WVX files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.

Step 2. Create association of Windows Media Player with WVX files

However, it may happen that the application itself does not cause the WVX file to open in the Windows Media Player application, but you can set it manually. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. The window will show, among other things, the type of the file and the information by which the program is used to launch the file. Changes can be made using the "Change" button. The program should be visible in the window, otherwise it should be selected manually using the "Browse" button and the program installation directory should be indicated. The "always use the selected program ..." field will set the Windows Media Player application as the default for handling the WVX file.

Step 3. Update Windows Media Player to the latest version

If, despite the association of the Windows Media Player program with the Windows Media Video Redirector file, the file still does not open, check the program version and possibly update it to the newest version. Some applications allow you to update from the program level, and for others you need to download the installer from the Microsoft Corporation page and install.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the WVX file

Of course, it may happen that despite the above steps, the file still does not work. This could be due to the file itself, the cleanest issues are:

The WVX file may be unusually small compared to the original file. Usually this applies to WVX files downloaded from the Internet in case the download did not finish properly. The file should be downloaded again, making sure that the process has finished correctly.
The computer may have fallen victim to a computer virus or hacker. A quick virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should clear up any doubts. Alternatively, you can use the scanners available online. For the best results, we will scan the entire operating system, not just our WVX file. Sometimes virus-infected WVX files cannot be recovered, so make a backup in advance.
This can happen especially when the program is dynamically developed and the structure of the WVX files changes over time. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for this. The repair method must be adapted to the type of file and damage. Some programs offer the ability to automatically repair WVX file corruption. You can restore the file from a backup or use Microsoft help.
When reading, a message appears that the file was encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted WVX files cannot be played on other computers than the one on which they were encrypted, they must be decrypted before using on another device.
Some of the system directories are excluded from modification. While there is usually no problem reading such a file, it may not be possible to save it. If possible, you can try to move the WVX file to another location.
This problem only occurs with more complex files. In this case, the WVX file is blocked by the first application to open it. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. Sometimes you have to wait for the session to the file WVX to close. Antivirus programs or a backup being made may lock the file for a while without the user's knowledge. If the problem persists, restart the machine.
