What is VPK file?
The .VPK file is an archive file associated with the Steam platform. These files are used by games based on the Source engine. The content of the file may consist of any resources used by the game. .VPK files are created using the vpk.exe tool located in the Steam root directory. The tool must be executed at the command prompt. The .VPK file is an extension of the previously used .GCF format. These files are not intended to be changed by the user in any way.
How to open VPK file?
The main problem with Valve Pak is that the VPK file is incorrectly associated with programs. This causes the file VPK to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. This problem can be easily remedied.
The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the VPK file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

An often overlooked issue is to make sure that GridMount is installed on the computer. To do this, enter the name GridMount into the system search engine. Step 2. Create association of GridMount with VPK files
If, despite the installed application, the VPK file does not start in the GridMount application, you must create a file association. It is most convenient to call the context menu with the right mouse button and select Properties. Information about the file and the program that the file is associated with are available here. Using the "Change" button we can select the desired program. The program should be visible in the window, otherwise it should be selected manually using the "Browse" button and the program installation directory should be indicated. The "always use the selected program ..." field will set the GridMount application as the default for handling the VPK file.
Step 3. Update GridMount to the latest version
If, however, after binding GridMount with Valve Pak there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version. This can be done using the application (if it provides such options) or from the Coding Range website and install the latest version.
Step 4. Check for the following problems with the VPK file
The problem may also be with the file itself if the above steps don't work. File problems can be divided into the following:
Very often, the file may be size 0 or incomplete. This suggests truncating the VPK file contents when downloading or copying. Downloading the file again should fix the problem.
The operating system may be infected with a computer virus. A virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should fix the problem. If this is not possible, you can use the online scanner. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the VPK file that we want to open. Sometimes virus-infected VPK files cannot be recovered, so make a backup in advance.
This can happen especially when the program is dynamically developed and the structure of the VPK files changes over time. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for the failure. The repair method must be adapted to the type of file and damage. Sometimes the program itself has options to repair the most popular VPK file corruption. The easiest way to restore the file is from a backup or by contacting Valve, but this one can be expensive. Not all damage can be reversed.
The program can also signal the fact of encryption. The encrypted file VPK except for the special designation, works normally, but only on the device where it was encrypted, before transferring it to another machine, decryption is required.
