What is TMD file?

The file with the extension TMD is the Text Files file type. The author of this format is SoftMaker Software. In addition to this file, the Text Files category includes 440 related files. TextMaker Document is most often found on 2 operating systems. The file will work on Linux, Windows systems, unfortunately not on others. The SoftMaker Office application is recommended to open the file. It was released by SoftMaker Software GmbH. Alternatively, you can use 4 other programs. TextMaker Viewer, TextMaker, Ashampoo Office will apply when it is not possible to use SoftMaker Office.

How to open TMD file?

The most common problem when using TextMaker Document is that a specific TMD is not associated with the program. This causes the file TMD to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. How to solve such a problem?

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the TMD file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install SoftMaker Office

The first step is to check if the computer has the SoftMaker Office program installed. This can be achieved by typing SoftMaker Office into the operating system search engine. If it is not, installation may solve the problem, as most applications create file associations during installation. Below you will find a list of applications that support TMD files.

Step 2. Create association of SoftMaker Office with TMD files

If, despite the installed application, the TMD file does not start in the SoftMaker Office application, you must create a file association. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. The displayed window will contain information about the program that supports this type of file. Using the "Change" button we can set the program to handle this type. It may happen that in the next window there will be no appropriate program - however, this can be corrected with the "Browse" option where you should manually indicate the program location. However, it is important to check the "Always use the selected program ..." box, this will allow you to permanently associate the TMD file with the SoftMaker Office application.

Step 3. Update SoftMaker Office to the latest version

If, despite the association of the SoftMaker Office program with the TextMaker Document file, the file still does not open, check the program version and possibly update it to the newest version. Some applications allow you to update from the program level, and for others you need to download the installer from the SoftMaker Software GmbH page and install.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the TMD file

Of course, it may happen that despite the above steps, the file still does not work. The most common file problems are:

The TMD file may be unusually small compared to the original file. Usually this applies to TMD files downloaded from the Internet in case the download did not finish properly. The file should be downloaded again, making sure that the process has finished correctly.
The computer may have fallen victim to a computer virus or hacker. Perform a virus scan using available and up-to-date anti-virus software. Some antivirus vendors also provide free online scanners. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the TMD file that we want to open. As a result of the scan, sometimes it is not possible to recover TMD files, which are deleted if there is a backup of this file, then after restoring it, it must also be scanned.
A typical compatibility error - the program does not support the older version of the TMD file. Help should be sought from the software developer, as they usually recommend using free file converters or installing an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for this. The repair method must be adapted to the type of file and damage. Some programs offer the option of recovering data from damaged TMD files. The easiest way is to restore the file from a backup, if there is one, or contact SoftMaker Software
The program indicates that the file is encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted TMD files cannot be played on other computers than the one on which they were encrypted, they must be decrypted before using on another device.
Some of the system directories are excluded from modification. These directories are write-protected to them and it's very hard to fix this problem. It is best to move TMD to a different directory.
This problem only occurs with more complex files. You may find that another program you are using is preventing you from working with the file. Just close unnecessary programs. Sometimes you have to wait for the session to the file TMD to close. However, some background programs may block the TMD file while scanning. If this does not work either, restart the device.
