Tips to open TIF file
Can't open the TIF file? You are not the only one. Thousands of users face similar problems every day. Below you will find tips on how to open TIF files as well as a list of programs that support TIF files.
TIF file extension
The TIF file is supported on 3 operating systems. Depending on your operating system, you may need different software to handle the TIF files. Below is a summary of the number of programs that support and open the TIF file on each system platform.
What is TIF file?
A .TIF file is a graphic file similar to a .TIFF. The shorter entry results from the use of the 8.3 naming convention derived from DOS. It is a graphic with a set of printing facilities, such as dividing an image into pages. It offers 24-bit color depth with an Alpha channel responsible for transparency. The .TIF format is adapted to high image quality and various compression methods, but it turned out that the format was not widely adopted. However, there are no problems with using it.
How to open TIF file?
An often recurring problem with Tagged Image Format is that TIF is not associated with the correct program file. This causes the file TIF to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. How to solve such a problem?
The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the TIF file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.
Step 1. Install Apple Preview
An often overlooked issue is to make sure that Apple Preview is installed on the computer. To do this, enter the name Apple Preview into the system search engine. In the absence of an appropriate program, its installation in the vast majority of cases will fix the problem. Later in this article you will find a list of programs that can open TIF files.
Programs to open TIF file
Remember to download programs supporting TIF files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.
Step 2. Create association of Apple Preview with TIF files
If the application is or has been freshly installed, but the TIF file still does not use the Apple Preview program, it means no association. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. The displayed window will contain information about the program that supports this type of file. Using the "Change" button we can select the desired program. It may happen that in the next window there will be no appropriate program - however, this can be corrected with the "Browse" option where you should manually indicate the program location. The "always use the selected program ..." field will set the Apple Preview application as the default for handling the TIF file.
Step 3. Update Apple Preview to the latest version
The fault may also lie with the Apple Preview program, it is possible that Tagged Image Format requires a newer version of the program.
Step 4. Check for the following problems with the TIF file
If the above steps do not help, you can assume that the file itself is not correct. File problems can be divided into the following:
The TIF file may be unusually small compared to the original file. This suggests truncating the TIF file contents when downloading or copying. The only repair option is to download the file again.
The operating system may be infected with a computer virus. Perform a virus scan using available and up-to-date anti-virus software. Alternatively, you can use the scanners available online. However, it is important to scan the entire system, not only the file TIF or the program directory. Sometimes virus-infected TIF files cannot be recovered, so make a backup in advance.
A typical compatibility error - the program does not support the older version of the TIF file. These problems are known and are often very easy to fix using the software developers's website.
There can be many reasons for the failure. Depending on the type of file, it is necessary to repair it accordingly. Some programs offer the option of recovering data from damaged TIF files.
The program indicates that the file is encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted TIF files cannot be played on other computers than the one on which they were encrypted, they must be decrypted before using on another device.
Some operating systems do not allow file operations in certain locations, eg in system directories or directly on the system drive. These directories are write-protected to them and it's very hard to fix this problem. If possible, you can try to move the TIF file to another location.
This problem usually affects more complex files. In this case, the TIF file is blocked by the first application to open it. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. If the error persists after closing other programs, wait for a while. However, some background programs may block the TIF file while scanning. If nothing helps, please reset the device.
