How to open TFD file?

The most common problem when using Tape Format Requirements Document is that a specific TFD is not associated with the program. This causes the file TFD to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. This can be quickly resolved by following the instructions below.

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the TFD file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install VITec PC

An often overlooked issue is to make sure that VITec PC is installed on the computer. To do this, enter the name VITec PC into the system search engine. If we do not have this program, it is worth installing it, as it will help you automatically associate the file TFD with VITec PC. Below you will find a list of applications that support TFD files.

Programs to open TFD file

Remember to download programs supporting TFD files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.

Step 2. Create association of VITec PC with TFD files

If the application is or has been freshly installed, but the TFD file still does not use the VITec PC program, it means no association. This option is available from the level of Properties of a specific file available in the context menu. The displayed window will contain information about the program that supports this type of file. Using the "Change" button we can select the desired program. It may happen that in the next window there will be no appropriate program - however, this can be corrected with the "Browse" option where you should manually indicate the program location. Checking the "Always use the selected program ..." box will permanently associate the TFD file with the VITec PC program.

Step 3. Update VITec PC to the latest version

If, however, after binding VITec PC with Tape Format Requirements Document there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the TFD file

The problem may also be with the file itself if the above steps don't work. The most common file problems are:

The affected file may be 0 KB or smaller than expected. This suggests truncating the TFD file contents when downloading or copying. Downloading the file again should fix the problem.
The operating system may be infected with a computer virus. A virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should fix the problem. Some antivirus vendors also provide free online scanners. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the TFD file that we want to open. Sometimes virus-infected TFD files cannot be recovered, so make a backup in advance.
This can happen especially when the program is dynamically developed and the structure of the TFD files changes over time. Help should be sought from the software developer, as they usually recommend using free file converters or installing an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for the failure. Depending on the type of file, it is necessary to repair it accordingly. Some programs offer the ability to automatically repair TFD file corruption.
The program indicates that the file is encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted TFD files can be used by the device on which they were encrypted, on any other device it is required to have the appropriate cryptographic key and decrypt the file before its recovery.
Some operating systems do not allow file operations in certain locations, eg in system directories or directly on the system drive. These directories are write-protected to them and it's very hard to fix this problem. Copying the TFD file to another location will fix the problem.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. You may find that another program you are using is preventing you from working with the file. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. If the error persists after closing other programs, wait for a while. However, some background programs may block the TFD file while scanning. If nothing helps, please reset the device.
