The SMC file is supported on 3 operating systems. Depending on your operating system, you may need different software to handle the SMC files. Below is a summary of the number of programs that support and open the SMC file on each system platform.
What is SMC file?
The .SMC file is a game file. It is the contents of the cartridge memory saved in the form of a file. Such files are called ROMs. They are used by emulators of various consoles, especially those in which the carriers are not compatible with computers. In the case of the .SMC file, the ROMs are for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System console, also known as the SNES. The use of ROMs is fully legal only with the original media and console, unless the copyright to them has already expired.
How to open SMC file?
The most common problem when using Super Nintendo Game ROM is that a specific SMC is not associated with the program. This causes the file SMC to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. This can be quickly resolved by following the instructions below.
The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the SMC file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.
Step 1. Install Snes9x
In this case, you should first verify that the Snes9x application is installed on the computer. This can be achieved by typing Snes9x into the operating system search engine. In the absence of an appropriate program, its installation in the vast majority of cases will fix the problem. Later in this article you will find a list of programs that can open SMC files.
Programs to open SMC file
Remember to download programs supporting SMC files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.
Step 2. Create association of Snes9x with SMC files
If the application is or has been freshly installed, but the SMC file still does not use the Snes9x program, it means no association. This option is available from the level of Properties of a specific file available in the context menu. The displayed window will contain information about the program that supports this type of file. Using the "Change" button we can set the program to handle this type. If there is no software on the list, simply select "Browse" and manually select the directory where the application is installed. The "always use the selected program ..." field will set the Snes9x application as the default for handling the SMC file.
Step 3. Update Snes9x to the latest version
If, despite the association of the Snes9x program with the Super Nintendo Game ROM file, the file still does not open, check the program version and possibly update it to the newest version.
Step 4. Check for the following problems with the SMC file
Of course, it may happen that despite the above steps, the file still does not work. File problems can be divided into the following:
Very often, the file may be size 0 or incomplete. This suggests truncating the SMC file contents when downloading or copying. The only repair option is to download the file again.
The most common cause here is computer viruses. Perform a virus scan using available and up-to-date anti-virus software. Some antivirus vendors also provide free online scanners. For the best results, we will scan the entire operating system, not just our SMC file. Sometimes virus-infected SMC files cannot be recovered, so make a backup in advance.
A typical compatibility error - the program does not support the older version of the SMC file. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for the failure. Depending on the type of file, it is necessary to repair it accordingly. Some programs offer the ability to automatically repair SMC file corruption.
The program can also signal the fact of encryption. The encrypted SMC files cannot be played on other computers than the one on which they were encrypted, they must be decrypted before using on another device.
The operating system protects files in some locations (e.g. the root of the system partition) against unauthorized access. While there is usually no problem reading such a file, it may not be possible to save it. It is best to move SMC to a different directory.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. In this case, the SMC file is blocked by the first application to open it. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. Sometimes it is necessary to wait a while before referencing the SMC file again. Antivirus programs or a backup being made may lock the file for a while without the user's knowledge. If this does not work either, restart the device.
