Tips to open SLD file
Can't open the SLD file? You are not the only one. Thousands of users face similar problems every day. Below you will find tips on how to open SLD files as well as a list of programs that support SLD files.

The SLD file is supported on 3 operating systems. Depending on your operating system, you may need different software to handle the SLD files. Below is a summary of the number of programs that support and open the SLD file on each system platform.
What is SLD file?
The file in the SLD format belongs to the GIS Files category. The author of this format is Open Geospatial Consortium. GIS Files consists of 255 similar files. Styled Layer Descriptor Format is supported by 3 operating systems. These systems consist of Linux, Mac OS, Windows, although it may occasionally be found on another system, it will be non-functional. This file type can also be opened by 3 other programs. You can use SLD editor in case GeoServer cannot be used.
How to open SLD file?
The main problem with Styled Layer Descriptor Format is that the SLD file is incorrectly associated with programs. This is manifested by the fact that SLD files open in unusual applications or do not have an assigned program. How to solve such a problem?
The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the SLD file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.
Step 1. Install GeoServer
An often overlooked issue is to make sure that GeoServer is installed on the computer. The easiest method is to use the system search engine by entering the program name GeoServer in it. If it is not, installation may solve the problem, as most applications create file associations during installation. Later in this article you will find a list of programs that can open SLD files.

Remember to download programs supporting SLD files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.
Step 2. Create association of GeoServer with SLD files
If, despite the installed application, the SLD file does not start in the GeoServer application, you must create a file association. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. Information about the file and the program that the file is associated with are available here. Changes can be made using the "Change" button. It may happen that in the next window there will be no appropriate program - however, this can be corrected with the "Browse" option where you should manually indicate the program location. The "always use the selected program ..." field will set the GeoServer application as the default for handling the SLD file.
Step 3. Update GeoServer to the latest version
If, however, after binding GeoServer with Styled Layer Descriptor Format there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version.
Step 4. Check for the following problems with the SLD file
If the above steps do not help, you can assume that the file itself is not correct. This could be due to the file itself, the cleanest issues are:
Very often, the file may be size 0 or incomplete. Usually this applies to SLD files downloaded from the Internet in case the download did not finish properly. The file should be downloaded again, making sure that the process has finished correctly.
The operating system may be infected with a computer virus. A quick virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should clear up any doubts. Alternatively, you can use the scanners available online. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the SLD file that we want to open. As a result of the scan, sometimes it is not possible to recover SLD files, which are deleted if there is a backup of this file, then after restoring it, it must also be scanned.
This can happen especially when the program is dynamically developed and the structure of the SLD files changes over time. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for this. Repairing is very dependent on the file type. Some programs offer the ability to automatically repair SLD file corruption.
The program indicates that the file is encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted SLD files can be used by the device on which they were encrypted, on any other device it is required to have the appropriate cryptographic key and decrypt the file before its recovery.
The operating system protects files in some locations (e.g. the root of the system partition) against unauthorized access. The problem is only writing to the file, not reading it. It is best to move SLD to a different directory.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. Some file types can only be opened in one program at a time. Just close unnecessary programs. Sometimes you have to wait for the session to the file SLD to close. However, some background programs may block the SLD file while scanning. If the problem persists, restart the machine.
