What is SIT file?

The .SIT file is an archive file. It is a format associated with the Smith Micro (formerly Aladdin Systems) StuffIt software. Initially, the software and file format were only supported on the MacOS platform. Currently, the software covers Macintosh, iOS and Microsoft Windows platforms. The format was developed into the .SITX format, which allows increased compression compared to the original. Both formats are supported by very few external software and it is recommended to use genuine software.

How to open SIT file?

An often recurring problem with StuffIt Archive is that SIT is not associated with the correct program file. This is manifested by the fact that SIT files open in unusual applications or do not have an assigned program. This problem can be easily remedied.

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the SIT file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install StuffIt Deluxe

In this case, you should first verify that the StuffIt Deluxe application is installed on the computer. To do this, enter the name StuffIt Deluxe into the system search engine. In the absence of an appropriate program, its installation in the vast majority of cases will fix the problem. Below is a list of programs that support the file SIT.

Step 2. Create association of StuffIt Deluxe with SIT files

If, despite the installed application, the SIT file does not start in the StuffIt Deluxe application, you must create a file association. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. The window will show, among other things, the type of the file and the information by which the program is used to launch the file. Using the "Change" button we can select the desired program. The program should be visible in the window, otherwise it should be selected manually using the "Browse" button and the program installation directory should be indicated. Checking the "Always use the selected program ..." box will permanently associate the SIT file with the StuffIt Deluxe program.

Step 3. Update StuffIt Deluxe to the latest version

If, despite the association of the StuffIt Deluxe program with the StuffIt Archive file, the file still does not open, check the program version and possibly update it to the newest version. Some applications allow you to update from the program level, and for others you need to download the installer from the Smith Micro Software, Inc. page and install.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the SIT file

The problem may also be with the file itself if the above steps don't work. This could be due to the file itself, the cleanest issues are:

The SIT file may be unusually small compared to the original file. This suggests truncating the SIT file contents when downloading or copying. Downloading the file again should fix the problem.
The operating system may be infected with a computer virus. Perform a virus scan using available and up-to-date anti-virus software. If this is not possible, you can use the online scanner. For the best results, we will scan the entire operating system, not just our SIT file. As a result of the scan, sometimes it is not possible to recover SIT files, which are deleted if there is a backup of this file, then after restoring it, it must also be scanned.
This can happen especially when the program is dynamically developed and the structure of the SIT files changes over time. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
The file may be corrupted in a number of ways. The repair method must be adapted to the type of file and damage. Sometimes the program itself has options to repair the most popular SIT file corruption. The easiest way is to restore the file from a backup, if there is one, or contact Smith Micro
The program can also signal the fact of encryption. The encrypted SIT files can be used by the device on which they were encrypted, on any other device it is required to have the appropriate cryptographic key and decrypt the file before its recovery.
The operating system protects files in some locations (e.g. the root of the system partition) against unauthorized access. The problem is only writing to the file, not reading it. Copying the SIT file to another location will fix the problem.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. In this case, the SIT file is blocked by the first application to open it. Just close unnecessary programs. If the error persists after closing other programs, wait for a while. However, some background programs may block the SIT file while scanning. If nothing helps, please reset the device.
