What is SAV file?

The .SAV file is a game file. Contains saved game progress. It is not a rigid standard, so .SAV files can be freely interpreted by the software and contain various data. Files of this type can be found in user directories or directly in the game or emulator location. Deleting the file may result in loss of progress. It is not always possible to transfer .SAV files between computers. Each file can be used by a different game or software.

How to open SAV file?

An often recurring problem with Saved Game is that SAV is not associated with the correct program file. Thus, when you open SAV, the program selection wizard or some other program starts. How to solve such a problem?

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the SAV file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install Original program

The first step is to check if the computer has the Original program program installed. To do this, enter the name Original program into the system search engine. If it is not, installation may solve the problem, as most applications create file associations during installation. Below you will find a list of applications that support SAV files.

Step 2. Create association of Original program with SAV files

If the application is or has been freshly installed, but the SAV file still does not use the Original program program, it means no association. This option is available from the level of Properties of a specific file available in the context menu. The displayed window will contain information about the program that supports this type of file. Using the "Change" button we can select the desired program. If there is no software on the list, simply select "Browse" and manually select the directory where the application is installed. However, it is important to check the "Always use the selected program ..." box, this will allow you to permanently associate the SAV file with the Original program application.

Step 3. Update Original program to the latest version

If, however, after binding Original program with Saved Game there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the SAV file

If the above steps do not help, you can assume that the file itself is not correct. The most common file problems are:

The SAV file may be unusually small compared to the original file. Usually this applies to SAV files downloaded from the Internet in case the download did not finish properly. The file should be downloaded again, making sure that the process has finished correctly.
The computer may have fallen victim to a computer virus or hacker. A quick virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should clear up any doubts. Some antivirus vendors also provide free online scanners. For the best results, we will scan the entire operating system, not just our SAV file. However, remember that not every infected SAV file can be recovered, so it is important to take care of regular backups.
Older version of SAV file may not always be supported by the latest software version. Help should be sought from the software developer, as they usually recommend using free file converters or installing an older version of the program.
The file may be corrupted in a number of ways. Repairing is very dependent on the file type. Some programs offer the ability to automatically repair SAV file corruption.
When reading, a message appears that the file was encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted SAV files cannot be played on other computers than the one on which they were encrypted, they must be decrypted before using on another device.
The operating system protects files in some locations (e.g. the root of the system partition) against unauthorized access. While there is usually no problem reading such a file, it may not be possible to save it. It is best to move SAV to a different directory.
This problem usually affects more complex files. In this case, the SAV file is blocked by the first application to open it. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. Sometimes you have to wait for the session to the file SAV to close. However, some background programs may block the SAV file while scanning. If this does not work either, restart the device.
