What is RVG file?
The file in the RVG format belongs to the Misc Files category. The author of this format is Autodesk, Inc.. Additionally, the Misc Files category contains 6033 of other files. Revit External Group is supported by 1 operating systems. Although it can be found with greater or lesser success on any operating system, it will only be useful on Windows. The main program that supports this format is Revit Architecture. This was created by Autodesk, Inc..
How to open RVG file?
An often recurring problem with Revit External Group is that RVG is not associated with the correct program file. This causes the file RVG to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. This can be quickly resolved by following the instructions below.
The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the RVG file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.
Step 1. Install Revit Architecture
An often overlooked issue is to make sure that Revit Architecture is installed on the computer. To do this, enter the name Revit Architecture into the system search engine. If we do not have this program, it is worth installing it, as it will help you automatically associate the file RVG with Revit Architecture. Later in this article you will find a list of programs that can open RVG files.

Remember to download programs supporting RVG files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.
Step 2. Create association of Revit Architecture with RVG files
If the application is or has been freshly installed, but the RVG file still does not use the Revit Architecture program, it means no association. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. Information about the file and the program that the file is associated with are available here. Using the "Change" button we can set the program to handle this type. The program should be visible in the window, otherwise it should be selected manually using the "Browse" button and the program installation directory should be indicated. However, it is important to check the "Always use the selected program ..." box, this will allow you to permanently associate the RVG file with the Revit Architecture application.
Step 3. Update Revit Architecture to the latest version
If, however, after binding Revit Architecture with Revit External Group there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version. In this case, use the Autodesk, Inc. website or update the program from the application.
Step 4. Check for the following problems with the RVG file
Of course, it may happen that despite the above steps, the file still does not work. This could be due to the file itself, the cleanest issues are:
The RVG file may be unusually small compared to the original file. This is most often caused by a problem while downloading the RVG file. The only repair option is to download the file again.
The operating system may be infected with a computer virus. A quick virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should clear up any doubts. If this is not possible, you can use the online scanner. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the RVG file that we want to open. However, remember that not every infected RVG file can be recovered, so it is important to take care of regular backups.
Older version of RVG file may not always be supported by the latest software version. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for this. Depending on the type of file, it is necessary to repair it accordingly. Some programs offer the option of recovering data from damaged RVG files. You can restore the file from a backup or use Autodesk, Inc. help.
The program can also signal the fact of encryption. The encrypted RVG files can be used by the device on which they were encrypted, on any other device it is required to have the appropriate cryptographic key and decrypt the file before its recovery.
The operating system protects files in some locations (e.g. the root of the system partition) against unauthorized access. These directories are write-protected to them and it's very hard to fix this problem. If possible, you can try to move the RVG file to another location.
This problem only occurs with more complex files. You may find that another program you are using is preventing you from working with the file. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. If the error persists after closing other programs, wait for a while. However, some background programs may block the RVG file while scanning. If the problem persists, restart the machine.
