The PCAP file is supported on 2 operating systems. Depending on your operating system, you may need different software to handle the PCAP files. Below is a summary of the number of programs that support and open the PCAP file on each system platform.
What is PCAP file?
A .PCAP file is a file with captured network packets. It is created by Wireshark software by monitoring and logging network traffic. This file can then be used to analyze the network operation, direction and packet traffic. Wireshark software is available for all platforms. Packet analysis requires knowledge of computer networks and may reveal sensitive information about others. In its main assumption, however, it is used to solve network problems.
How to open PCAP file?
The main problem with Packet Capture Data is that the PCAP file is incorrectly associated with programs. Thus, when you open PCAP, the program selection wizard or some other program starts. How to solve such a problem?
The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the PCAP file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.
Step 1. Install Wireshark
The first step is to check if the computer has the Wireshark program installed. The easiest method is to use the system search engine by entering the program name Wireshark in it. If we do not have this program, it is worth installing it, as it will help you automatically associate the file PCAP with Wireshark. Below you will find a list of applications that support PCAP files.
Programs to open PCAP file
Remember to download programs supporting PCAP files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.
Step 2. Create association of Wireshark with PCAP files
If, despite the installed application, the PCAP file does not start in the Wireshark application, you must create a file association. This option is available from the level of Properties of a specific file available in the context menu. Information about the file and the program that the file is associated with are available here. Using the "Change" button we can set the program to handle this type. If there is no software on the list, simply select "Browse" and manually select the directory where the application is installed. However, it is important to check the "Always use the selected program ..." box, this will allow you to permanently associate the PCAP file with the Wireshark application.
Step 3. Update Wireshark to the latest version
If, however, after binding Wireshark with Packet Capture Data there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version. This can be done using the application (if it provides such options) or from the Gerald Combs website and install the latest version.
Step 4. Check for the following problems with the PCAP file
The problem may also be with the file itself if the above steps don't work. File problems can be divided into the following:
The affected file may be 0 KB or smaller than expected. This is most often caused by a problem while downloading the PCAP file. The file should be downloaded again, making sure that the process has finished correctly.
The computer may have fallen victim to a computer virus or hacker. Perform a virus scan using available and up-to-date anti-virus software. Alternatively, you can use the scanners available online. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the PCAP file that we want to open. However, remember that not every infected PCAP file can be recovered, so it is important to take care of regular backups.
Older version of PCAP file may not always be supported by the latest software version. These problems are known and are often very easy to fix using the software developers's website.
There can be many reasons for the failure. Repairing is very dependent on the file type. Some programs offer the ability to automatically repair PCAP file corruption. The easiest way to restore the file is from a backup or by contacting Wireshark, but this one can be expensive. Not all damage can be reversed.
The program indicates that the file is encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted PCAP files cannot be played on other computers than the one on which they were encrypted, they must be decrypted before using on another device.
Some of the system directories are excluded from modification. These directories are write-protected to them and it's very hard to fix this problem. Copying the PCAP file to another location will fix the problem.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. Some file types can only be opened in one program at a time. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. If the error persists after closing other programs, wait for a while. Antivirus programs or a backup being made may lock the file for a while without the user's knowledge. If the problem persists, restart the machine.
