What is OTF file?

The .OTF file is a font. It is an OpenType font. The font does not lose quality when resized. Most often you can find .OTF files in the system directory with fonts, as it must be there to be visible to the system. The OpenType format is a collaboration between Microsoft and Adobe. It is a combination of PostScript and TrueType based fonts. OpenType fonts can be used on many systems, although they are designed to run on Mac and Microsoft systems.

How to open OTF file?

The main problem with OpenType Font is that the OTF file is incorrectly associated with programs. This causes the file OTF to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. This problem can be easily remedied.

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the OTF file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install Apple Font Book

The first step is to check if the computer has the Apple Font Book program installed. To do this, enter the name Apple Font Book into the system search engine. In the absence of an appropriate program, its installation in the vast majority of cases will fix the problem. Later in this article you will find a list of programs that can open OTF files.

Step 2. Create association of Apple Font Book with OTF files

If the application is or has been freshly installed, but the OTF file still does not use the Apple Font Book program, it means no association. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. The window will show, among other things, the type of the file and the information by which the program is used to launch the file. Changes can be made using the "Change" button. If there is no software on the list, simply select "Browse" and manually select the directory where the application is installed. Checking the "Always use the selected program ..." box will permanently associate the OTF file with the Apple Font Book program.

Step 3. Update Apple Font Book to the latest version

The fault may also lie with the Apple Font Book program, it is possible that OpenType Font requires a newer version of the program.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the OTF file

If the above steps do not help, you can assume that the file itself is not correct. This could be due to the file itself, the cleanest issues are:

Very often, the file may be size 0 or incomplete. This is most often caused by a problem while downloading the OTF file. Downloading the file again should fix the problem.
The computer may have fallen victim to a computer virus or hacker. A virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should fix the problem. Alternatively, you can use the scanners available online. However, it is important to scan the entire system, not only the file OTF or the program directory. Sometimes virus-infected OTF files cannot be recovered, so make a backup in advance.
Older version of OTF file may not always be supported by the latest software version. These problems are known and are often very easy to fix using the software developers's website.
The file may be corrupted in a number of ways. Repairing is very dependent on the file type. Some programs offer the ability to automatically repair OTF file corruption.
When reading, a message appears that the file was encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted file OTF except for the special designation, works normally, but only on the device where it was encrypted, before transferring it to another machine, decryption is required.
Some operating systems do not allow file operations in certain locations, eg in system directories or directly on the system drive. While there is usually no problem reading such a file, it may not be possible to save it. It is best to move OTF to a different directory.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. Some file types can only be opened in one program at a time. Just close unnecessary programs. Sometimes it is necessary to wait a while before referencing the OTF file again. Antivirus programs or a backup being made may lock the file for a while without the user's knowledge. If this does not work either, restart the device.
