What is OBB file?

OBB file is an archive format. It contains additional data of the program on the Android system, which did not fit into the main installer of the .APK application. This is due to the 50MB limit imposed on the officially distributed .APK files. It is true that the programmer can use any external files, but .OBB is supported directly from the development tools and is additionally encrypted, which protects against unauthorized access. These files should not be deleted or attempted to modify.

How to open OBB file?

An often recurring problem with Android Opaque Binary Blob Format is that OBB is not associated with the correct program file. This causes the file OBB to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. This problem can be easily remedied.

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the OBB file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install Google Play Developer Console

An often overlooked issue is to make sure that Google Play Developer Console is installed on the computer. The easiest method is to use the system search engine by entering the program name Google Play Developer Console in it. If it is not, installation may solve the problem, as most applications create file associations during installation. Below is a list of programs that support the file OBB.

Remember to download programs supporting OBB files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.

Step 2. Create association of Google Play Developer Console with OBB files

However, it may happen that the application itself does not cause the OBB file to open in the Google Play Developer Console application, but you can set it manually. It is most convenient to call the context menu with the right mouse button and select Properties. The window will show, among other things, the type of the file and the information by which the program is used to launch the file. Using the "Change" button we can set the program to handle this type. If there is no software on the list, simply select "Browse" and manually select the directory where the application is installed. However, it is important to check the "Always use the selected program ..." box, this will allow you to permanently associate the OBB file with the Google Play Developer Console application.

Step 3. Update Google Play Developer Console to the latest version

If, however, after binding Google Play Developer Console with Android Opaque Binary Blob Format there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the OBB file

Of course, it may happen that despite the above steps, the file still does not work. File problems can be divided into the following:

Very often, the file may be size 0 or incomplete. This is most often caused by a problem while downloading the OBB file. The only repair option is to download the file again.
The operating system may be infected with a computer virus. A quick virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should clear up any doubts. Alternatively, you can use the scanners available online. For the best results, we will scan the entire operating system, not just our OBB file. However, remember that not every infected OBB file can be recovered, so it is important to take care of regular backups.
Older version of OBB file may not always be supported by the latest software version. These problems are known and are often very easy to fix using the software developers's website.
There can be many reasons for this. The repair method must be adapted to the type of file and damage. Sometimes the program itself has options to repair the most popular OBB file corruption.
The program indicates that the file is encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted OBB files cannot be played on other computers than the one on which they were encrypted, they must be decrypted before using on another device.
The operating system protects files in some locations (e.g. the root of the system partition) against unauthorized access. While there is usually no problem reading such a file, it may not be possible to save it. If possible, you can try to move the OBB file to another location.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. You may find that another program you are using is preventing you from working with the file. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. If the error persists after closing other programs, wait for a while. However, some background programs may block the OBB file while scanning. If nothing helps, please reset the device.
