What is NED file?

The NED file has been categorized as Developer Files. It was designed by OMNeT++ Community. In addition to this file, the Developer Files category includes 1205 related files. OMNeT++ Network Description Format appears on 3 operating systems as a functional file. The file will work on Linux, Mac OS, Windows systems, unfortunately not on others. The OMNeT++ application is recommended to open the file. It was released by OMNeT++ Community. There are also 2 alternative programs to handle the NED file.

How to open NED file?

The most common problem when using OMNeT++ Network Description Format is that a specific NED is not associated with the program. This causes the file NED to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. This can be quickly resolved by following the instructions below.

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the NED file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install OMNeT++

The first step is to check if the computer has the OMNeT++ program installed. This can be achieved by typing OMNeT++ into the operating system search engine. If we do not have this program, it is worth installing it, as it will help you automatically associate the file NED with OMNeT++. Below you will find a list of applications that support NED files.

Programs to open NED file

Remember to download programs supporting NED files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.

Step 2. Create association of OMNeT++ with NED files

If the application is or has been freshly installed, but the NED file still does not use the OMNeT++ program, it means no association. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. Information about the file and the program that the file is associated with are available here. Using the "Change" button we can set the program to handle this type. It may happen that in the next window there will be no appropriate program - however, this can be corrected with the "Browse" option where you should manually indicate the program location. The "always use the selected program ..." field will set the OMNeT++ application as the default for handling the NED file.

Step 3. Update OMNeT++ to the latest version

The fault may also lie with the OMNeT++ program, it is possible that OMNeT++ Network Description Format requires a newer version of the program. This can be done using the application (if it provides such options) or from the OMNeT++ Community website and install the latest version.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the NED file

Of course, it may happen that despite the above steps, the file still does not work. This could be due to the file itself, the cleanest issues are:

Very often, the file may be size 0 or incomplete. This is most often caused by a problem while downloading the NED file. The only repair option is to download the file again.
The operating system may be infected with a computer virus. A quick virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should clear up any doubts. Some antivirus vendors also provide free online scanners. For the best results, we will scan the entire operating system, not just our NED file. As a result of the scan, sometimes it is not possible to recover NED files, which are deleted if there is a backup of this file, then after restoring it, it must also be scanned.
A typical compatibility error - the program does not support the older version of the NED file. These problems are known and are often very easy to fix using the software developers's website.
There can be many reasons for this. Repairing is very dependent on the file type. Sometimes the program itself has options to repair the most popular NED file corruption. The easiest way to restore the file is from a backup or by contacting OMNeT++ Community, but this one can be expensive. Not all damage can be reversed.
The program indicates that the file is encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted NED files can be used by the device on which they were encrypted, on any other device it is required to have the appropriate cryptographic key and decrypt the file before its recovery.
Some of the system directories are excluded from modification. These directories are write-protected to them and it's very hard to fix this problem. If possible, you can try to move the NED file to another location.
This problem only occurs with more complex files. In this case, the NED file is blocked by the first application to open it. Closing other programs should help. If the error persists after closing other programs, wait for a while. Antivirus programs or a backup being made may lock the file for a while without the user's knowledge. If nothing helps, please reset the device.
