What is MXT file?

The MXT file has been categorized as GIS Files. It was designed by ESRI. Additionally, the GIS Files category contains 255 of other files. ArcGIS Map Template is most often found on 1 operating systems. These systems consist of Windows, although it may occasionally be found on another system, it will be non-functional. It is recommended to use ArcGIS Desktop to handle this file. This is a program created by Esri.

How to open MXT file?

An often recurring problem with ArcGIS Map Template is that MXT is not associated with the correct program file. This causes the file MXT to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. This problem can be easily remedied.

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the MXT file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install ArcGIS Desktop

An often overlooked issue is to make sure that ArcGIS Desktop is installed on the computer. This can be achieved by typing ArcGIS Desktop into the operating system search engine. If it is not, installation may solve the problem, as most applications create file associations during installation. Below you will find a list of applications that support MXT files.

Remember to download programs supporting MXT files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.

Step 2. Create association of ArcGIS Desktop with MXT files

If, despite the installed application, the MXT file does not start in the ArcGIS Desktop application, you must create a file association. It is most convenient to call the context menu with the right mouse button and select Properties. The window will show, among other things, the type of the file and the information by which the program is used to launch the file. Using the "Change" button we can select the desired program. The program should be visible in the window, otherwise it should be selected manually using the "Browse" button and the program installation directory should be indicated. Checking the "Always use the selected program ..." box will permanently associate the MXT file with the ArcGIS Desktop program.

Step 3. Update ArcGIS Desktop to the latest version

If, despite the association of the ArcGIS Desktop program with the ArcGIS Map Template file, the file still does not open, check the program version and possibly update it to the newest version. In this case, use the Esri website or update the program from the application.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the MXT file

The problem may also be with the file itself if the above steps don't work. This could be due to the file itself, the cleanest issues are:

The affected file may be 0 KB or smaller than expected. This is most often caused by a problem while downloading the MXT file. The file should be downloaded again, making sure that the process has finished correctly.
The most common cause here is computer viruses. Perform a virus scan using available and up-to-date anti-virus software. Alternatively, you can use the scanners available online. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the MXT file that we want to open. Sometimes virus-infected MXT files cannot be recovered, so make a backup in advance.
This can happen especially when the program is dynamically developed and the structure of the MXT files changes over time. These problems are known and are often very easy to fix using the software developers's website.
There can be many reasons for the failure. The repair method must be adapted to the type of file and damage. Some programs offer the ability to automatically repair MXT file corruption. The easiest way to restore the file is from a backup or by contacting ESRI, but this one can be expensive. Not all damage can be reversed.
When reading, a message appears that the file was encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted MXT files cannot be played on other computers than the one on which they were encrypted, they must be decrypted before using on another device.
Some operating systems do not allow file operations in certain locations, eg in system directories or directly on the system drive. These directories are write-protected to them and it's very hard to fix this problem. Copying the MXT file to another location will fix the problem.
This problem usually affects more complex files. In this case, the MXT file is blocked by the first application to open it. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. Sometimes you have to wait for the session to the file MXT to close. However, some background programs may block the MXT file while scanning. If this does not work either, restart the device.
