The MUS file is supported on 2 operating systems. Depending on your operating system, you may need different software to handle the MUS files. Below is a summary of the number of programs that support and open the MUS file on each system platform.
What is MUS file?
The .MUS file is an audio file. It only contains sheet music without an audio track. It is an exclusive format for MakeMusic software. It is an extension of the MIDI format (.MID file) with additional functionalities. Additional data can only be read by MakeMusic software. The .MUS file has been replaced with .MUSX since version 2014, but the predecessor is still supported. The software is fully commercial, but there are free programs from this manufacturer, however, they offer limited functionality.
How to open MUS file?
The main problem with Finale Notation Format is that the MUS file is incorrectly associated with programs. This causes the file MUS to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. How to solve such a problem?
The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the MUS file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.
Step 1. Install MakeMusic Finale
The first step is to check if the computer has the MakeMusic Finale program installed. The easiest method is to use the system search engine by entering the program name MakeMusic Finale in it. In the absence of an appropriate program, its installation in the vast majority of cases will fix the problem. Below you will find a list of applications that support MUS files.
Programs to open MUS file
Remember to download programs supporting MUS files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.
Step 2. Create association of MakeMusic Finale with MUS files
If the application is or has been freshly installed, but the MUS file still does not use the MakeMusic Finale program, it means no association. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. Information about the file and the program that the file is associated with are available here. Using the "Change" button we can set the program to handle this type. The program should be visible in the window, otherwise it should be selected manually using the "Browse" button and the program installation directory should be indicated. The "always use the selected program ..." field will set the MakeMusic Finale application as the default for handling the MUS file.
Step 3. Update MakeMusic Finale to the latest version
If, despite the association of the MakeMusic Finale program with the Finale Notation Format file, the file still does not open, check the program version and possibly update it to the newest version.
Step 4. Check for the following problems with the MUS file
Of course, it may happen that despite the above steps, the file still does not work. File problems can be divided into the following:
The MUS file may be unusually small compared to the original file. This is most often caused by a problem while downloading the MUS file. The only repair option is to download the file again.
The computer may have fallen victim to a computer virus or hacker. Perform a virus scan using available and up-to-date anti-virus software. If this is not possible, you can use the online scanner. For the best results, we will scan the entire operating system, not just our MUS file. As a result of the scan, sometimes it is not possible to recover MUS files, which are deleted if there is a backup of this file, then after restoring it, it must also be scanned.
Older version of MUS file may not always be supported by the latest software version. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for this. The repair method must be adapted to the type of file and damage. Sometimes the program itself has options to repair the most popular MUS file corruption.
When reading, a message appears that the file was encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted MUS files can be used by the device on which they were encrypted, on any other device it is required to have the appropriate cryptographic key and decrypt the file before its recovery.
Some operating systems do not allow file operations in certain locations, eg in system directories or directly on the system drive. These directories are write-protected to them and it's very hard to fix this problem. It is best to move MUS to a different directory.
This problem only occurs with more complex files. In this case, the MUS file is blocked by the first application to open it. Just close unnecessary programs. Sometimes you have to wait for the session to the file MUS to close. Some anti-virus or backup software may occupy the MUS file for a certain period of time. If this does not work either, restart the device.
