What is MPO file?

The .MPO file is an image file. It is a stereoscopic photo taken from two images in the .JPEG format. Both photos show the same scene, but from two different angles corresponding to the position of the human eyes. These photos are called a stereo pair. The image complex in this way (it requires special hardware or software) gives the impression of three-dimensionality. If an .MPO file is opened, only one image, usually the left one, will be displayed as a graphic file.

How to open MPO file?

The main problem with Multi Picture Object Format is that the MPO file is incorrectly associated with programs. Thus, when you open MPO, the program selection wizard or some other program starts. How to solve such a problem?

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the MPO file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install Stereomerger

An often overlooked issue is to make sure that Stereomerger is installed on the computer. The easiest method is to use the system search engine by entering the program name Stereomerger in it. If we do not have this program, it is worth installing it, as it will help you automatically associate the file MPO with Stereomerger. Below you will find a list of applications that support MPO files.

Step 2. Create association of Stereomerger with MPO files

If the application is or has been freshly installed, but the MPO file still does not use the Stereomerger program, it means no association. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. The window will show, among other things, the type of the file and the information by which the program is used to launch the file. Using the "Change" button we can select the desired program. It may happen that in the next window there will be no appropriate program - however, this can be corrected with the "Browse" option where you should manually indicate the program location. Checking the "Always use the selected program ..." box will permanently associate the MPO file with the Stereomerger program.

Step 3. Update Stereomerger to the latest version

If, however, after binding Stereomerger with Multi Picture Object Format there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version. In this case, use the Geir ?yvind V?lidalo website or update the program from the application.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the MPO file

The problem may also be with the file itself if the above steps don't work. The most common file problems are:

The MPO file may be unusually small compared to the original file. Usually this applies to MPO files downloaded from the Internet in case the download did not finish properly. The file should be downloaded again, making sure that the process has finished correctly.
The most common cause here is computer viruses. A virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should fix the problem. Alternatively, you can use the scanners available online. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the MPO file that we want to open. However, remember that not every infected MPO file can be recovered, so it is important to take care of regular backups.
A typical compatibility error - the program does not support the older version of the MPO file. These problems are known and are often very easy to fix using the software developers's website.
The file may be corrupted in a number of ways. Depending on the type of file, it is necessary to repair it accordingly. Some programs offer the ability to automatically repair MPO file corruption. You can restore the file from a backup or use CIPA help.
When reading, a message appears that the file was encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted MPO files can be used by the device on which they were encrypted, on any other device it is required to have the appropriate cryptographic key and decrypt the file before its recovery.
Some of the system directories are excluded from modification. The problem is only writing to the file, not reading it. Copying the MPO file to another location will fix the problem.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. In this case, the MPO file is blocked by the first application to open it. Just close unnecessary programs. Sometimes it is necessary to wait a while before referencing the MPO file again. However, some background programs may block the MPO file while scanning. If this does not work either, restart the device.
