What is MD5 file?

File. MD5 is a control file. It contains the calculated check sum. The checksum allows the file to be authenticated, to determine whether it has any errors and whether any changes have been made to it. The .MD5 file is supported by checksum software, download manager, and some disc burning software. However, it may be additionally supported in other applications that require file checking. The .MD5 file should not be opened nor edited manually.

How to open MD5 file?

The main problem with MD5 Checksum Format is that the MD5 file is incorrectly associated with programs. Thus, when you open MD5, the program selection wizard or some other program starts. This problem can be easily remedied.

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the MD5 file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install checkSum+

The first step is to check if the computer has the checkSum+ program installed. This can be achieved by typing checkSum+ into the operating system search engine. If it is not, installation may solve the problem, as most applications create file associations during installation. Below is a list of programs that support the file MD5.

Programs to open MD5 file

Remember to download programs supporting MD5 files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.

Step 2. Create association of checkSum+ with MD5 files

If the application is or has been freshly installed, but the MD5 file still does not use the checkSum+ program, it means no association. It is most convenient to call the context menu with the right mouse button and select Properties. Information about the file and the program that the file is associated with are available here. Using the "Change" button we can select the desired program. If there is no software on the list, simply select "Browse" and manually select the directory where the application is installed. However, it is important to check the "Always use the selected program ..." box, this will allow you to permanently associate the MD5 file with the checkSum+ application.

Step 3. Update checkSum+ to the latest version

If, despite the association of the checkSum+ program with the MD5 Checksum Format file, the file still does not open, check the program version and possibly update it to the newest version.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the MD5 file

Of course, it may happen that despite the above steps, the file still does not work. The most common file problems are:

The affected file may be 0 KB or smaller than expected. This is most often caused by a problem while downloading the MD5 file. Downloading the file again should fix the problem.
The most common cause here is computer viruses. A virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should fix the problem. Alternatively, you can use the scanners available online. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the MD5 file that we want to open. Sometimes virus-infected MD5 files cannot be recovered, so make a backup in advance.
Older version of MD5 file may not always be supported by the latest software version. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for the failure. Depending on the type of file, it is necessary to repair it accordingly. Sometimes the program itself has options to repair the most popular MD5 file corruption.
The program can also signal the fact of encryption. The encrypted MD5 files can be used by the device on which they were encrypted, on any other device it is required to have the appropriate cryptographic key and decrypt the file before its recovery.
Some of the system directories are excluded from modification. These directories are write-protected to them and it's very hard to fix this problem. It is best to move MD5 to a different directory.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. In this case, the MD5 file is blocked by the first application to open it. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. Sometimes it is necessary to wait a while before referencing the MD5 file again. Antivirus programs or a backup being made may lock the file for a while without the user's knowledge. If nothing helps, please reset the device.
