Tips to open IPT file
Can't open the IPT file? You are not the only one. Thousands of users face similar problems every day. Below you will find tips on how to open IPT files as well as a list of programs that support IPT files.

The IPT file is supported on 6 operating systems. Depending on your operating system, you may need different software to handle the IPT files. Below is a summary of the number of programs that support and open the IPT file on each system platform.
What is IPT file?
The .IPT file is a design file. It is used by Autodesk Inventor. A file corresponds to one object or part of another object. The .IPT files eventually come together in a .IAM project to form a complete device. The object design can be three-dimensional or saved in a three-dimensional projection. Inventor also allows you to extract data from other CAD formats and save them to a global design, so you can use it to combine designs from different sources.
How to open IPT file?
An often recurring problem with Inventor Part Format is that IPT is not associated with the correct program file. Thus, when you open IPT, the program selection wizard or some other program starts. This can be quickly resolved by following the instructions below.
The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the IPT file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.
Step 1. Install Fusion 360
In this case, you should first verify that the Fusion 360 application is installed on the computer. The easiest method is to use the system search engine by entering the program name Fusion 360 in it. If it is not, installation may solve the problem, as most applications create file associations during installation. Below is a list of programs that support the file IPT.

Remember to download programs supporting IPT files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.
Step 2. Create association of Fusion 360 with IPT files
However, it may happen that the application itself does not cause the IPT file to open in the Fusion 360 application, but you can set it manually. It is most convenient to call the context menu with the right mouse button and select Properties. Information about the file and the program that the file is associated with are available here. Using the "Change" button we can set the program to handle this type. It may happen that in the next window there will be no appropriate program - however, this can be corrected with the "Browse" option where you should manually indicate the program location. The "always use the selected program ..." field will set the Fusion 360 application as the default for handling the IPT file.
Step 3. Update Fusion 360 to the latest version
If, despite the association of the Fusion 360 program with the Inventor Part Format file, the file still does not open, check the program version and possibly update it to the newest version. This can be done using the application (if it provides such options) or from the Autodesk, Inc. website and install the latest version.
Step 4. Check for the following problems with the IPT file
Of course, it may happen that despite the above steps, the file still does not work. This could be due to the file itself, the cleanest issues are:
The IPT file may be unusually small compared to the original file. This is most often caused by a problem while downloading the IPT file. The file should be downloaded again, making sure that the process has finished correctly.
The operating system may be infected with a computer virus. Perform a virus scan using available and up-to-date anti-virus software. Alternatively, you can use the scanners available online. For the best results, we will scan the entire operating system, not just our IPT file. However, remember that not every infected IPT file can be recovered, so it is important to take care of regular backups.
This can happen especially when the program is dynamically developed and the structure of the IPT files changes over time. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
The file may be corrupted in a number of ways. Repairing is very dependent on the file type. Sometimes the program itself has options to repair the most popular IPT file corruption. The easiest way is to restore the file from a backup, if there is one, or contact Autodesk
When reading, a message appears that the file was encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted IPT files can be used by the device on which they were encrypted, on any other device it is required to have the appropriate cryptographic key and decrypt the file before its recovery.
The operating system protects files in some locations (e.g. the root of the system partition) against unauthorized access. While there is usually no problem reading such a file, it may not be possible to save it. If possible, you can try to move the IPT file to another location.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. You may find that another program you are using is preventing you from working with the file. Closing other programs should help. If the error persists after closing other programs, wait for a while. Antivirus programs or a backup being made may lock the file for a while without the user's knowledge. If this does not work either, restart the device.
