What is IGS file?

The .IGS file is an image file. It contains vector graphics: two-dimensional and three-dimensional. In terms of structure, it is a text file based on ASCII encoding. The file is described by the Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGES) standard. The history of the format goes back to the 80s of the last century. The file has now been replaced with the newer .STP format for most applications. Most CAD programs open this format but do not recommend saving in it. This format may be required for some specialized applications.

How to open IGS file?

An often recurring problem with IGES Drawing Format is that IGS is not associated with the correct program file. Thus, when you open IGS, the program selection wizard or some other program starts. This can be quickly resolved by following the instructions below.

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the IGS file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install TurboCAD

An often overlooked issue is to make sure that TurboCAD is installed on the computer. To do this, enter the name TurboCAD into the system search engine. If we do not have this program, it is worth installing it, as it will help you automatically associate the file IGS with TurboCAD. Below is a list of programs that support the file IGS.

Step 2. Create association of TurboCAD with IGS files

However, it may happen that the application itself does not cause the IGS file to open in the TurboCAD application, but you can set it manually. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. The displayed window will contain information about the program that supports this type of file. Using the "Change" button we can set the program to handle this type. If there is no software on the list, simply select "Browse" and manually select the directory where the application is installed. However, it is important to check the "Always use the selected program ..." box, this will allow you to permanently associate the IGS file with the TurboCAD application.

Step 3. Update TurboCAD to the latest version

If, however, after binding TurboCAD with IGES Drawing Format there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version. In this case, use the IMSI/Design, LLC. website or update the program from the application.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the IGS file

The problem may also be with the file itself if the above steps don't work. File problems can be divided into the following:

The affected file may be 0 KB or smaller than expected. This suggests truncating the IGS file contents when downloading or copying. Downloading the file again should fix the problem.
The operating system may be infected with a computer virus. A quick virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should clear up any doubts. If this is not possible, you can use the online scanner. For the best results, we will scan the entire operating system, not just our IGS file. As a result of the scan, sometimes it is not possible to recover IGS files, which are deleted if there is a backup of this file, then after restoring it, it must also be scanned.
This can happen especially when the program is dynamically developed and the structure of the IGS files changes over time. These problems are known and are often very easy to fix using the software developers's website.
There can be many reasons for this. Repairing is very dependent on the file type. Sometimes the program itself has options to repair the most popular IGS file corruption. The easiest way is to restore the file from a backup, if there is one, or contact N/A
When reading, a message appears that the file was encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted IGS files can be used by the device on which they were encrypted, on any other device it is required to have the appropriate cryptographic key and decrypt the file before its recovery.
The operating system protects files in some locations (e.g. the root of the system partition) against unauthorized access. These directories are write-protected to them and it's very hard to fix this problem. If possible, you can try to move the IGS file to another location.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. You may find that another program you are using is preventing you from working with the file. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. Sometimes it is necessary to wait a while before referencing the IGS file again. Some anti-virus or backup software may occupy the IGS file for a certain period of time. If the problem persists, restart the machine.
