Step 2. Create association of Greenfoot with GREENFOOT files
If, despite the installed application, the GREENFOOT file does not start in the Greenfoot application, you must create a file association. This option is available from the level of Properties of a specific file available in the context menu. The window will show, among other things, the type of the file and the information by which the program is used to launch the file. Using the "Change" button we can select the desired program. If there is no software on the list, simply select "Browse" and manually select the directory where the application is installed. Checking the "Always use the selected program ..." box will permanently associate the GREENFOOT file with the Greenfoot program.
Step 3. Update Greenfoot to the latest version
If, despite the association of the Greenfoot program with the Greenfoot Project file, the file still does not open, check the program version and possibly update it to the newest version. This can be done using the application (if it provides such options) or from the Greenfoot.org website and install the latest version.
The problem may also be with the file itself if the above steps don't work. File problems can be divided into the following:
Very often, the file may be size 0 or incomplete. This is most often caused by a problem while downloading the GREENFOOT file. The only repair option is to download the file again.
The computer may have fallen victim to a computer virus or hacker. Perform a virus scan using available and up-to-date anti-virus software. Alternatively, you can use the scanners available online. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the GREENFOOT file that we want to open. However, remember that not every infected GREENFOOT file can be recovered, so it is important to take care of regular backups.
This can happen especially when the program is dynamically developed and the structure of the GREENFOOT files changes over time. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
The file may be corrupted in a number of ways. Repairing is very dependent on the file type. Some programs offer the option of recovering data from damaged GREENFOOT files. You can restore the file from a backup or use Greenfoot.org help.
The program can also signal the fact of encryption. The encrypted GREENFOOT files can be used by the device on which they were encrypted, on any other device it is required to have the appropriate cryptographic key and decrypt the file before its recovery.
Some of the system directories are excluded from modification. While there is usually no problem reading such a file, it may not be possible to save it. If possible, you can try to move the GREENFOOT file to another location.
This problem only occurs with more complex files. In this case, the GREENFOOT file is blocked by the first application to open it. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. Sometimes you have to wait for the session to the file GREENFOOT to close. However, some background programs may block the GREENFOOT file while scanning. If nothing helps, please reset the device.
