What is EML file?

The .EML file is a text format file. It is an E-Mail that is saved as a file. It contains all the elements of the original: sender, recipients, subject, content of the message and its attachments, if any. In the case of attachments, they are in binary form. Files of this type can be opened by all Internet mail programs. You can quickly preview a file with a text editor, but remember that large files can be difficult to read.

How to open EML file?

The most common problem when using E-Mail Message is that a specific EML is not associated with the program. Thus, when you open EML, the program selection wizard or some other program starts. How to solve such a problem?

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the EML file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install Microsoft Outlook

An often overlooked issue is to make sure that Microsoft Outlook is installed on the computer. To do this, enter the name Microsoft Outlook into the system search engine. If it is not, installation may solve the problem, as most applications create file associations during installation. Later in this article you will find a list of programs that can open EML files.

Remember to download programs supporting EML files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.

Step 2. Create association of Microsoft Outlook with EML files

However, it may happen that the application itself does not cause the EML file to open in the Microsoft Outlook application, but you can set it manually. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. The displayed window will contain information about the program that supports this type of file. Using the "Change" button we can set the program to handle this type. The program should be visible in the window, otherwise it should be selected manually using the "Browse" button and the program installation directory should be indicated. The "always use the selected program ..." field will set the Microsoft Outlook application as the default for handling the EML file.

Step 3. Update Microsoft Outlook to the latest version

If, however, after binding Microsoft Outlook with E-Mail Message there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version. In this case, use the Microsoft Corporation website or update the program from the application.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the EML file

If the above steps do not help, you can assume that the file itself is not correct. File problems can be divided into the following:

Very often, the file may be size 0 or incomplete. Usually this applies to EML files downloaded from the Internet in case the download did not finish properly. Downloading the file again should fix the problem.
The operating system may be infected with a computer virus. Perform a virus scan using available and up-to-date anti-virus software. Alternatively, you can use the scanners available online. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the EML file that we want to open. Sometimes virus-infected EML files cannot be recovered, so make a backup in advance.
A typical compatibility error - the program does not support the older version of the EML file. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for the failure. Depending on the type of file, it is necessary to repair it accordingly. Some programs offer the option of recovering data from damaged EML files. The easiest way is to restore the file from a backup, if there is one, or contact Microsoft
The program indicates that the file is encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted EML files can be used by the device on which they were encrypted, on any other device it is required to have the appropriate cryptographic key and decrypt the file before its recovery.
Some of the system directories are excluded from modification. These directories are write-protected to them and it's very hard to fix this problem. Copying the EML file to another location will fix the problem.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. You may find that another program you are using is preventing you from working with the file. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. Sometimes it is necessary to wait a while before referencing the EML file again. Antivirus programs or a backup being made may lock the file for a while without the user's knowledge. If this does not work either, restart the device.
