The EFI file is supported on 3 operating systems. Depending on your operating system, you may need different software to handle the EFI files. Below is a summary of the number of programs that support and open the EFI file on each system platform.
What is EFI file?
The EFI file has been categorized as System Files. The author of this format is UEFI Forum. In addition to this file, the System Files category includes 323 related files. Extensible Firmware Interface Format appears on 3 operating systems as a functional file. These systems consist of Linux, Mac OS, Windows, although it may occasionally be found on another system, it will be non-functional. Alternatively, you can use 2 other programs.
How to open EFI file?
The most common problem when using Extensible Firmware Interface Format is that a specific EFI is not associated with the program. This is manifested by the fact that EFI files open in unusual applications or do not have an assigned program. This problem can be easily remedied.
The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the EFI file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.
Step 1. Install EFI Developer Kit
The first step is to check if the computer has the EFI Developer Kit program installed. The easiest method is to use the system search engine by entering the program name EFI Developer Kit in it. In the absence of an appropriate program, its installation in the vast majority of cases will fix the problem. Below is a list of programs that support the file EFI.
Programs to open EFI file
Remember to download programs supporting EFI files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.
Step 2. Create association of EFI Developer Kit with EFI files
If the application is or has been freshly installed, but the EFI file still does not use the EFI Developer Kit program, it means no association. The association can be created using the drop-down list available by right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties. Information about the file and the program that the file is associated with are available here. Using the "Change" button we can set the program to handle this type. If there is no software on the list, simply select "Browse" and manually select the directory where the application is installed. Checking the "Always use the selected program ..." box will permanently associate the EFI file with the EFI Developer Kit program.
Step 3. Update EFI Developer Kit to the latest version
If, however, after binding EFI Developer Kit with Extensible Firmware Interface Format there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version.
Step 4. Check for the following problems with the EFI file
Of course, it may happen that despite the above steps, the file still does not work. The most common file problems are:
Very often, the file may be size 0 or incomplete. Usually this applies to EFI files downloaded from the Internet in case the download did not finish properly. The only repair option is to download the file again.
The most common cause here is computer viruses. A quick virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should clear up any doubts. If this is not possible, you can use the online scanner. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the EFI file that we want to open. As a result of the scan, sometimes it is not possible to recover EFI files, which are deleted if there is a backup of this file, then after restoring it, it must also be scanned.
Older version of EFI file may not always be supported by the latest software version. Help should be sought from the software developer, as they usually recommend using free file converters or installing an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for the failure. Depending on the type of file, it is necessary to repair it accordingly. Some programs offer the option of recovering data from damaged EFI files.
When reading, a message appears that the file was encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted file EFI except for the special designation, works normally, but only on the device where it was encrypted, before transferring it to another machine, decryption is required.
Some operating systems do not allow file operations in certain locations, eg in system directories or directly on the system drive. The problem is only writing to the file, not reading it. It is best to move EFI to a different directory.
This problem only occurs with more complex files. Some file types can only be opened in one program at a time. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. If the error persists after closing other programs, wait for a while. Some anti-virus or backup software may occupy the EFI file for a certain period of time. If the problem persists, restart the machine.
