What is DVI file?

The file with the extension DVI is the Text Files file type. Text Files consists of 440 similar files. Device Independent Format appears on 3 operating systems as a functional file. The file will work on Linux, Mac OS, Windows systems, unfortunately not on others. This file type can also be opened by 6 other programs. The MiKTeX, LaTeX, DVII programs will also handle the file when the Skim program does not fulfill its role.

How to open DVI file?

The most common problem when using Device Independent Format is that a specific DVI is not associated with the program. This is manifested by the fact that DVI files open in unusual applications or do not have an assigned program. This problem can be easily remedied.

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the DVI file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install Skim

The first step is to check if the computer has the Skim program installed. This can be achieved by typing Skim into the operating system search engine. If we do not have this program, it is worth installing it, as it will help you automatically associate the file DVI with Skim. Later in this article you will find a list of programs that can open DVI files.

Remember to download programs supporting DVI files only from verified and safe sources. We suggest using the websites of software developers.

Step 2. Create association of Skim with DVI files

If the application is or has been freshly installed, but the DVI file still does not use the Skim program, it means no association. This option is available from the level of Properties of a specific file available in the context menu. The displayed window will contain information about the program that supports this type of file. Changes can be made using the "Change" button. It may happen that in the next window there will be no appropriate program - however, this can be corrected with the "Browse" option where you should manually indicate the program location. The "always use the selected program ..." field will set the Skim application as the default for handling the DVI file.

Step 3. Update Skim to the latest version

The fault may also lie with the Skim program, it is possible that Device Independent Format requires a newer version of the program.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the DVI file

If the above steps do not help, you can assume that the file itself is not correct. This could be due to the file itself, the cleanest issues are:

The affected file may be 0 KB or smaller than expected. This is most often caused by a problem while downloading the DVI file. Downloading the file again should fix the problem.
The most common cause here is computer viruses. A quick virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should clear up any doubts. Some antivirus vendors also provide free online scanners. For the best results, we will scan the entire operating system, not just our DVI file. Sometimes virus-infected DVI files cannot be recovered, so make a backup in advance.
This can happen especially when the program is dynamically developed and the structure of the DVI files changes over time. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for the failure. Depending on the type of file, it is necessary to repair it accordingly. Sometimes the program itself has options to repair the most popular DVI file corruption.
The program can also signal the fact of encryption. The encrypted file DVI except for the special designation, works normally, but only on the device where it was encrypted, before transferring it to another machine, decryption is required.
Some operating systems do not allow file operations in certain locations, eg in system directories or directly on the system drive. While there is usually no problem reading such a file, it may not be possible to save it. It is best to move DVI to a different directory.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. Some file types can only be opened in one program at a time. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. If the error persists after closing other programs, wait for a while. Antivirus programs or a backup being made may lock the file for a while without the user's knowledge. If this does not work either, restart the device.
