What is XMI file?

The file in the XMI format belongs to the Data Files category. The author of this format is Object Management Group. Data Files consists of 1326 similar files. XML Metadata Interchange Format is most often found on 3 operating systems. Although it can be found with greater or lesser success on any operating system, it will only be useful on Linux, Mac OS, Windows. It is recommended to use MagicDraw to handle this file. This is a program created by No Magic, Inc.. There are also 6 alternative programs to handle the XMI file. Awave Studio, Eclipse IDE, Liquid XML Studio, UModel will apply when it is not possible to use MagicDraw.

How to open XMI file?

An often recurring problem with XML Metadata Interchange Format is that XMI is not associated with the correct program file. This causes the file XMI to open by system applications not designed for this purpose, or to display a message that there is no associated program. This problem can be easily remedied.

The first thing you should do is just "doubleclick" on the XMI file icon you want to open. If the operating system has an appropriate application to support it and there is also an association between the file and the program, the file should be opened.

Step 1. Install MagicDraw

An often overlooked issue is to make sure that MagicDraw is installed on the computer. This can be achieved by typing MagicDraw into the operating system search engine. If we do not have this program, it is worth installing it, as it will help you automatically associate the file XMI with MagicDraw. Later in this article you will find a list of programs that can open XMI files.

Step 2. Create association of MagicDraw with XMI files

However, it may happen that the application itself does not cause the XMI file to open in the MagicDraw application, but you can set it manually. This option is available from the level of Properties of a specific file available in the context menu. The displayed window will contain information about the program that supports this type of file. Using the "Change" button we can select the desired program. It may happen that in the next window there will be no appropriate program - however, this can be corrected with the "Browse" option where you should manually indicate the program location. Checking the "Always use the selected program ..." box will permanently associate the XMI file with the MagicDraw program.

Step 3. Update MagicDraw to the latest version

If, however, after binding MagicDraw with XML Metadata Interchange Format there were still problems, you should update the program to the latest version. This can be done using the application (if it provides such options) or from the No Magic, Inc. website and install the latest version.

Step 4. Check for the following problems with the XMI file

Of course, it may happen that despite the above steps, the file still does not work. File problems can be divided into the following:

Very often, the file may be size 0 or incomplete. This is most often caused by a problem while downloading the XMI file. The file should be downloaded again, making sure that the process has finished correctly.
The computer may have fallen victim to a computer virus or hacker. A virus scan using an up-to-date antivirus program should fix the problem. If this is not possible, you can use the online scanner. The scan should cover the entire computer, not only the XMI file that we want to open. Sometimes virus-infected XMI files cannot be recovered, so make a backup in advance.
A typical compatibility error - the program does not support the older version of the XMI file. On their websites, developers usually offer free solutions to such problems, e.g. in the form of a conversion program or an older version of the program.
There can be many reasons for this. The repair method must be adapted to the type of file and damage. Sometimes the program itself has options to repair the most popular XMI file corruption. The easiest way is to restore the file from a backup, if there is one, or contact Object Management Group
The program indicates that the file is encrypted or corrupted. The encrypted XMI files can be used by the device on which they were encrypted, on any other device it is required to have the appropriate cryptographic key and decrypt the file before its recovery.
Some operating systems do not allow file operations in certain locations, eg in system directories or directly on the system drive. These directories are write-protected to them and it's very hard to fix this problem. If possible, you can try to move the XMI file to another location.
This can happen on a file that does not support multiple access. In this case, the XMI file is blocked by the first application to open it. Running programs (including those in the background) should be verified. Sometimes it is necessary to wait a while before referencing the XMI file again. Antivirus programs or a backup being made may lock the file for a while without the user's knowledge. If nothing helps, please reset the device.
